WILD HORSES
Wild Horses
Eastern Sierra, California
There’s truly no greater feeling than the profound one I experience when I’m fortunate enough to be in the presence of wild horses. Not far from my home in charming Bishop on the East side of the majestic Sierra, there’s a breathtaking herd that I visit frequently and have come to know quite well over time. The place is nothing short of magical, a vast valley beyond the shimmering waters of Mono Lake that looks across at expansive big skies, high peaks, and subject to the most dramatic and unpredictable weather. You honestly wouldn’t even think you were still in California anymore! Every single time I make the journey to visit, I am greeted with an exhilarating wild sense of freedom as I watch the large herds of mustangs, their thundering hooves echoing as they roar across the valley. It’s a cherished place that seems to possess its own unique spirit. I’ve spent countless hours exploring, camping, and photographing here, all in my effort to capture that wild spirit. On this particular stormy afternoon out with the herd, I found myself watching for hours as the horses stood together in solidarity against the relentless, howling winds. Their stunning beauty is only matched by their profound mystery and resilient spirit, creating an enduring allure that captivates all who encounter them.
