Seeing the northern lights in California was something I thought was surely impossible this far south, but not long ago I had the incredible chance to witness them for the first time in Mammoth Lakes! It was an incredible experience and I stayed up all night shooting images of Mammoth Mountain from high vantages and even under some of my favorite chairlifts. Now happening once again in the same year, I had a second opportunity at this once in a lifetime phenomenon following another wave of extremely strong solar activity. This time I was on the western side of the Sierra delivering art to one of my favorite clients when I got the news that it could happen again! I carefully considered the map for the best location and couldn’t think any greater place than Yosemite Valley for such a rare event. I headed up to Glacier Point arriving around midnight and set up on the edge of the cliffs 3,000ft above the valley floor. It didn’t take long before the aurora appeared with grand pillars and beams of reds and yellows dancing in the sky over half dome. Together with my girlfriend and dog Luna we sat out all night under the stars enjoying the majestic show that Mother Nature had to offer on this unforgettable night.
